The parts of the system
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| GPS device on the bus | Reports the bus position at regular intervals over a mobile network. |
| RFID reader on the bus | Records each student who taps their card on boarding and getting off. |
| Platform | Receives the data, shows the live map and sends alerts. |
| Parent app or calls | Shows parents the bus and tells them when their child boards and leaves. |
| School dashboard | Shows every bus, route, delay and alert in one place. |
What parents see
- The bus on a live map.
- An alert when their child boards the bus and when they get off.
- When the bus is approaching their stop.
What the school sees
- All buses on one screen.
- Speed alerts when a bus goes over the limit set by the school.
- Geo-fence alerts when a bus leaves its route or a defined area.
- Which students are on which bus right now.
GPS alone or GPS with RFID
GPS tells you where the bus is. It does not tell you whether a particular child is on it. Adding RFID cards on the bus closes that gap, which is why parents value boarding alerts more than the map. Read our guide to RFID vs biometric attendance.
What to check before choosing
- Are tracking, attendance and the parent app in one system?
- Who installs the devices and who fixes them when they fail?
- How are lost RFID cards handled?
- Who can see a student’s location, and is it limited to the right parents?
- Can you try it on one route first?

Frequently asked questions
Does school bus tracking need an internet connection?
The GPS device on the bus uses a mobile network to send its position. Parents and staff need internet access to view it.
Can a parent see other children’s locations?
A well-designed system shows parents only the bus their own child is assigned to.
What happens if a student forgets their RFID card?
The attendant can mark the student manually, and the school can follow its own policy for forgotten cards.
